The Lift of Men

by Rusel Lewis

I love the deadlift. Working every major muscle group in the body, it has no equal for neuromuscular stimulation. Its bug-eye, vein-popping-out-of-your-melon characteristics really tell who has the brass to get out on the field and play. An athlete who can get psyched up to hit a big deadlift can be counted upon to produce on the field.

Some of the athletes cannot grasp the deadlift for anatomical or psychological reasons, for these athletes, we use the hex-bar deadlift. At Modesto Christian, our players incorporate the hex-bar into their training once a week, using various reps depending on the training cycle.

We also use the hex-bar deadlift as a test for the athletes, for the squat can become very subjective (some places a ""squat"" can be a half squat, quarter squat, or any other variation). We deadlift in a controlled manner with a pause in between each rep.

Linemen have 405 on the bar and need to perform max reps up to 10. The 'Backs use 315 for reps and the real freaks of nature use 500lbs. These are picture perfect reps with only a belt used as supportive aids...no straps. Get them hooked on the hex-bar, then progress them to the Big Daddy-the deadlifts!

The season is only seven months away...are your players training?
