There is no real reason to be extremely intense (from a mental standpoint) throughout the entire workout.

The best are able to conjure up their focus for a lift almost on command, be clowning one minute and getting the work done the next.

Like an animal, playful, and in an instant, ready to kill.

The ability to turn it on and off really shows a measure of control, as an athlete, as well as a person who is the master of themselves. A sort of Dr. Jackal & Mr. Hyde situation.

This is especially useful on competition day, when distractions are at their highest.

We came up with all this after the workout below.

I was actually there to see this, and it was quite amazing. 15 singles at 475lb. in the deadlift with a fun attitude 95% of the time, but focus the time of the lift. I will agree, the great ones can turn it on and off like a switch. Too much mental energy is spent being pissed off or psyched up for two long before a comp. In a highland games this would be suicide. The guys who stayed cranked up too much between throws fall out half way through the game, which can sometimes be 8 hours long.

World record holder in the Olympic Hammer throw, Yuri Sedych, used to say that emotions were like a match. They fired up very brightly, but burnt out quick. They do not re-light to easily either. He used to sit under a tree and relax but focus, he usually opened the meet with a winning throw, putting even more pressure on the competition.

Use the mental energy and emotion when you need it, not the hour /night / week before. If you are one of those guys that do, let me know, I want to compete against you. :)

Oh man, that is classic! Singing along to the legendary "Jackie Blue" by Ozark Mountain Daredevils while doing heavy shrugs... I love it. What a great tune!
