Belhaven College - Speed, Strength, Conditioning...

by Ken Coggins

The Next Level

This will be taking athletes to a level of greatness in speed, strength, and conditioning. This program will include the running chute, the speed hurdles, the strength shoe, and Olympic weightlifting. This program will separate athletes from being average to becoming at a champion level. At Belhaven college our goal is to provide our athletes a unique opportunity to know the Lord Jesus Christ and represent Him in all of our sports here at Belhaven College.

This exercise begins with the athlete donning the running chute and the strength shoes.

1st the athlete jogs 20 yards, sprints 80 yards, and jogs 20 yards.

2nd the athlete jogs 20 yards, sprints 60 yards, and jogs 20 yards.

3rd the athlete jogs 20 yards, sprints 40 yards, and jogs 20 yards.

4th the athlete then does jingles line touches.

5th we go to our speed hurdles jumping plan. (Speed hurdles at Belhaven College works to strengthen the legs through jumping. It increases the frequency of the foot contact w/ the ground and off the ground and encourages rapid movements and repetition that ultimately effect speed.)

1) Single leg jump
2) Double leg jump
3) Alternating leg jump
4) Series leg jump
5) Alternating leg jump
6) Alternating series

Since putting this program in place, I have seen athletes get bigger, faster, and stronger through the use of the speed hurdles, the running chute and the strength shoe. It is time to take Belhaven College to the next level. Let the adventure begin!

I would like to take this opportunity to thank Richard Sorin of Sorinex Exercise Equipment for teaching me the way to build our state of the art strength and conditioning facility. I would also like to thank E.J. ""Doc"" Kreis, Head Speed, Strength, and Conditioning Coach at the University of Colorado at Boulder, for teaching me how to always find a way to take athletes to the next level. And finally I would like to thank Charlotte C. Scallon of Strength Systems for helping our athletes get faster with the use of the running chute and the strength shoe. I would also like to thank Winnie Stroman of the Stroman Company for helping us reach the next level with the use of the speed hurdles.
