View Full Version : Shot/Stone technique

I've read a few articles about proper technique in the shot and it appears that there are at least two differing views on shoulder/hip separation (the articles were on the full spin). Nowhere in these articles did they explicitly state one technique or another, it is just what I have inferred. One seems to say start with your shoulders twisted off the plane from your hips and keep that relation throughout the throw. The other says you can start with the hips slightly ahead of the shoulders but as you get into the power position you create bigger separation by reaching back with your off arm and getting the hips out front even more. I hope all of this made sense.

First, does anyone have an opinion on these two seemingly different approaches to shoulder/hip separation? Which one would be easier to master? Which one would be easier to teach? I ask not only from the standpoint of someone who is terrible at the shot and wants to improve, but also as a future high school throws coach.

I have been trying the "re-x" wrap back in the middle of the throw for a while. I still creep my shoulders in front of the hips, so I went to starting with them back, and trying to still "re-x". It seems to work for me a little better, because I can start the movement with my right leg much better.
Time will tell.

I can't speak for spinners, but as a glider, I get the most out of staying back for the full throws. Keep that focal point behind the circle until the last possible moment. Once you've hit the power position and the right foot starts to turn and bring the hips around, then let the shoulders catch up.
