We are just sooooo proud of AJ's accomplishments this year...ok we have always been proud of him, but being potty trained is not something you necessarily need to send an email out on!
I am sure some of you know the story...but AJ had never picked up the hammer until 2 summers ago. He went to a throwing camp, spent the next year teaching himself. In the spring he got to spend a week with our friend Bert Sorin (and Richard Sorin, both of Sorinex) who was kind enough to teach him additional tips and techniques (Bert, you are the man!). AJ went on to compete unattached at various meets in order to qualify for Junior Nationals. He did finally and went to JN's last June. In the under 19 class he finished 3rd in the nation...again he did this with out a coach and only limited throwing due to living in Jackson Hole, WY in the winter. During the summer AJ spent just about every day at the ring in our town practicing his throws. Ok...back to JN. Upon his placing 3rd (and garning a spot on the U.S. team which then competed in the Pan Am games in Brazil...note to self...when your mom tells you to get a passport and you feel that you wont do well enough to make the team so no big deal and you DONT get the passport...big mistake...needless to say, No passport...no ticket to Brazil). AJ was not able to go to the Pan Am games since he didnt have a passport. He has his passport now!
Needless to say by doing so well at JN he was approached by several schools (Univ. of Oregon, Univ. of Oklahoma, Univ of NC, West Valley college, Univ of Wyoming, and a couple others that I cant remember). He wound up going with Univ of Wyoming. He has done great this year and just about every meet set a new personal record including his 10 foot PR at the NCAA regionals which is huge. The cool part is with a full time coach to help him along with the fact that he is an "athletic freshman" competing mainly with Jr.s and Sr.s he is doing amazingly well and I cant wait to see what he will be throwing as a senior with 3 more years of maturing, mastering this event and gaining additional strength and conditioning, the sky is the limit. Or as I tell him TWD (total world domination). I cant remember if he is ranked 9th or 13th in the history of UW in hammer throw. Very cool.
Lauren (AJ's 17 y/o sister) has been bitten by the bug and is looking to throw the hammer as well. Coach Barret at UW is intrigued with her as he has seen what AJ has done and wonders what her potential is. We shall see.
