Question on keeping mass...

From: Tom Soldner Duluth, MN Comments:

This is not about your training equipment even though I am very interested in your products. I was wondering if you could give me a quick training tip. I am a thrower for the University of Minnesota-Duluth and I have a problem maintaining muscle mass and strength over the summer due to my summer job. I deliver pop in the summer and that involves a lot of repetitious lifting of light objects, I then proceed to the weight room in the evenings. I can't figure it out totally, am I lifting too much maybe? Or is it just that I should find another job? I don't know. Weightlifting is a priority to me, I enjoy it as much as I enjoy throwing. What do you think I should focus on in those summer months? Should it be weight gain and just maintaining my strength or what?(even though I hate the concept of maintaining strength). Thank you for your time.

Tom, Good to hear from you. Remember this: Muscle needs stimulation (lifting), but also rest to grow. If you are never letting it rest, you are cutting out 1/2 the factors for the equation. You are spent once you get to the weightroom, because you have been on your feet all day, and your energy stores have not been built up. You probably have a good level of conditioning and core strength from your job, so that is good, but you will not make many strength or size gains doing this. You need to be eating 5-6 times per day and resting if you can. Take a job that is less taxing on you, and you will be ready to lift and throw later on. Best of luck.

In Strength,
