Why use a belt?
by Bert Sorin
Many people do not know what the benefits a lifting belt are, or know why or why not the should use one. A belt does more than offer a perch for your walkman, it gives stability to the trunk area while lifting. This stability is created by inter-thoracic pressure produced by the abdominals and obliques pressing against an immovable object (the belt).
This produces a girdling effect around the spine using the muscles in the torso. In turn, the spine stays straighter and less strain is placed on the back during ""heavy lifting"". I stress ""heavy lifting"" because I feel that it is not always necessary to use a belt, especially with lighter weights and some specific torso exercises. Strengthening of the back and torso with out a belt is key to getting the maximum benefit of a belt and staying injury free during those heavy lifts.
