Psycho-Physical Culture
by Thomas Inch
The following selections were actually written by Thomas Inch (the "Physical Health Expert", strongman, consultant etc. who was the proprietor of the famous INCH Dumbbell). These valuable tips are just reprinted off of actual letters that Inch, himself, sent to J. Frost in June of 1922. Sorinex has been lucky enough to acquire these, and we wish to share the wisdom with the rest of the world.
Thanks.
----Psycho Physical Culture----
I have invented the above term some years ago to describe my method of combined mental and physical culture. It aptly describes a system of home training where the mind and body work harmoniously together. Let me endeavor to sum up the main points I have brought to your notice in this series of what we will call 'letter articles' for want of a better name.
I have impressed upon you the all-important part of which the mind must play when ill-health has to be routed, and self-confidence and self control is established. I have endeavored to show that the will power may be developed and brought to bear on health problems, how it also assists in the matter of physical development. I have given you valuable advice as to curing the 'worry habit', shown you how to gain a contented mind. You will have gathered that my method and advice will be most useful in everyday business and social life.
The healthy, happy man makes a good impression, -the unhealthy, unhappy man a bad impression. I say that it will pay to put the daily life upon a plan, just as a business is run. Be methodical, be systematic, in regard to your baths, your meals, your exercise, your daily walk, your time for retiring to rest. In fact, in all you do. Carelessness in business brings trouble, even bankruptcy. It does not seem to occur to people, even shrewd business men, but carelessness in health matters and general hygiene also leads to trouble, and it is just as possible to become health bankrupt as a financial bankrupt.
I have impressed upon you the value of a hobby. "All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy." I have tried to teach you the value of a cheerful society, and that you must learn to smile, teach yourself to face adversity. Aim at moderation in all things. Prune away vices, learn to help others.
I have had the feeling all thru' this set of letters that my advice may be both interesting and helpful, and sincerely hope the set of letters will be kept, and often read by you. There is not the least doubt they will be worth many times their weight in gold.
With the best of wishes for health and happiness,
Yours for health,
Thomas Inch
