In the wake of the loss of Al Oerter four time Olympic Champion, my friend, ,inspiration, and hero I had to take a step back and do some time alone thinking. I decided a day in the woods quiet and alone hunting might help. At the end of a day fending for my self totally relying on my lifetime of skills that "I took for granted in past years" I was forced into cold reality when a big buck stepped out. After the carefull, difficult shot, an inch by inch tracking to find my prize... followed by a heavy heart pounding drag through a beaver swamp.. I had no help, it was fading light I was tired, bloody but more alive than I have been in years. The memory of Al inspiring me to remember as they said in the movie City Slickers finding "that one thing" I think through his loss and my day totally alone I found that one thing. For each it is different but in itself the same. Doing what YOU love as good,as long and as hard as you can no matter if there are thousands cheering or.... you are alone. The love, dedication, and passion to a sport, your family, job,or whatever you hold close is the answer.....do it right to the end.I hope as my son Bert reaches his 31st birthday tomorrow he will find for himself one day "that one thing" and that Mr. Al Knows up there in heaven all the good he had done on earth.RS
