Create a Plan

by Bert Sorin

I have found lately while watching people in the gym that most folks really have no idea what they are doing. It is not their fault, they just have not been shown the proper steps to take when developing a plan.

A plan... now that is a pretty simple concept, but one that most people overlook when training. They walk into the gym and just start doing the machines with no rhyme or reason.

I hear reasons like, "The guy before me did it and he was pretty big", or "Because I can really feel that one working." Well, that is not the best way to go about serious exercise, obviously. One must realize that the weight equipment in the room are "tools" to be used to get a job done.

First, the person needs to look at what is desired to be improved, based on athletic, physical or appearance needs. When that is targeted, then the person can research a bit to find out the best apparatus to strengthen that specific area or movement. Now you are training with a purpose!

Example:

Too many people bench press 3 days per week because all of their friends want to know, "How much you bench?" They are not asking themselves, "Does my chest need to be bigger/stronger?" "Does this movement directly relate to my sport skill I am competing in?" "Is there another body part that I am neglecting?" These are just examples, but I often see people doing the same exercises over and over. Most of the time they are neglecting other lifts that would benefit them much more readily in their sport or for overall body strength.

So...decide what the problem area or movement is. Plan a course of action to remedy this. Pick the proper "tool" for the job. Stick to the plan!
Just some simple words that could help erase the training blues.
