Knowledge is Good!
by Rus Lewis
Last weekend I spent a great deal of time at Sacramento State taking the USAW Coaches Course taught by Dr. Bill Kutzer. All I can say is: SUPER! EXCELLENT! TAKE THIS COURSE! Oh, I can hear it now, that "I am a H.I.T. disciple" "I am conjugate or nothing" "Power is the only way." Well, this "My way or the highway" attitude does nothing for the young athletes. We as teachers need to learn all we can in order to show them there is more than one way to climb a mountain. I believe in sport specificity.
For example, the Clean and Jerk (CJ) and the Snatch (S) do not equate to drive blocking, but develop the ability to learn highly technical lifts which are done in a ballistic explosive manner. This translates to being able to learn a skills such as drive blocking much quicker.
The CJ and the S are compound movements, done standing, which directly requires stabilization. So, I feel that they parallel one another pretty nicely. I liked the USAW course because it put everyone on the same page. Kutzer is an excellent instructor, his next course is in September, all strength coaches in Northern California, YOU NEED TO GO!!!
