Lew's New Deadlift?
by Rusel Lewis
Ok...So nothing really new has been invented for years in the wonderful world of weights, but I like to think of loaded deadlifts to be my little contribution. More out of necessity than dynamic thinking, I started doing my deads out of the rack, starting in a complete stand-up position. I would then take one very small step back, just enough to clear the rack, but not enough to hear my discs compressing like hot Jiffy on a stove.
I would then lower the bar to 2,4, or 6 inch blocks depending whether I wanted to work the hams or the erectors more. The reason for the starting position was implemented was because I was having a bit of trouble assuming the conventional starting stance (down position). Lets say that some people talk about having a 6-pack stomach, my abs border on that of a large keg. (Enough about my Buddha like belly.)
By starting at the top position I was able to generate the stretch reflex and pre-load the muscle sufficiently. (Think of it as starting your squat in the hole.) By varying the height of the wooden blocks, I get a different feel each workout. Lately I have been using a thick bar to increase my grip strength, with excellent results.
Maybe it won't revolutionize the strength community, and some old time strong men may turn in their grave, but I proclaim PSRSLBD (Preloaded Stretch Reflex Stiff Leg Block Deads) to be my baby.
